Project results: |
The project will make it possible to stop the degradation of and to improve the ethno-architectural wooden heritage of the Euro-Carpathian region, leading to its touristic, cultural, and economic development, larger-scale cross-border cooperation, and the increase of the importance and prestige of the region in the European and world contexts.
Project implementation will lead to a better reciprocal knowledge and understanding of the cultural and architectural values of our peoples, to the development of a sense of belonging to a geographic area which is unique in Europe, to the increase of collaboration, and to the initiation of new joint cross-border activities in the near future.

Description: |
One of the few regions of Europe which preserve ethno-architectural values of special interest in terms of artistic, cultural, ethnographic, and architectural significance is the Euro-Carpathian region. In this region, common to Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Ukraine, we can find old wooden churches, some of which are included in the UNESCO heritage while others are of national and European significance.
These churches, with their specificity and uniqueness, yet sharing a feature unique to the Euro-Carpathian region, namely, their construction mainly or entirely of wood, exhibit an important ethno-architectural dimension which can be harnessed through the development of intense cross-border tourism aimed at both the inhabitants of the region and especially the European and worldwide tourists.
The paintings on wood and the wooden architectural elements of these churches are outstanding artwork. Unfortunately, the paintings on wood as well as the wood itself are subjected to natural and anthropogenic destructive agents to a much larger extent than other heritage buildings. It is therefore highly necessary to assess the conservation and restoration needs and the destructive physical, chemical, and biological agents, to study the nature of the compounds in the paintings on wood, and to implement some of the latest conservation techniques suitable for wood preservation.
